NCAA Tournament Appearances - A Texas Tech Men's Tennis Tradition

Making NCAA tournament appearances has become a tradition for the Texas Tech men's tennis team under Director of Tennis Tim Siegel. With this year's selection, the Red Raiders have advanced to the postseason for the fourth straight season in a row. Furthermore, it is the fifth time in Siegel's seven year at Texas Tech that the team has made an NCAA appearance. It will be the third time the Red Raiders have faced the Aggies in the opening round in the 1990's.

Familiar Foes At Regional

When Texas Tech arrives in Austin it is likely to see some familiar faces. The Red Raiders played Texas A&M and Texas once each in conference play this season. The Red Raiders dropped both matches. They fell to Texas A&M, 5-2, on April 1 and to Texas, 6-1, on April 3. In the latest ITA poll, Texas A&M has a 14-6 record and is ranked 23rd in the nation. Texas, the Big 12 champions , have a 23-4 mark and are ranked 6th..

Texas Tech Reaches New High

With its 28th place ranking in the April 6th intercollegiate tennis poll, the 1999 Red Raiders achieved the highest ranking for a Tim Siegel led team. It was an impressive jump of 43 spots from Texas Tech's initial fall ranking.

Texas Tech has Most Wins Ever Under Tim Siegel

After finishing the regular season 15-9, the 1999 Texas Tech men's tennis team will be remembered as Tim Siegel's most successful ever. Eight of the 15 wins came against teams ranked in the top 75,while 7 of the 8 losses came to teams that currently reside in the top 25. Siegel's previous winningest team was the 1993 squad that finished 14-9 - it was Siegel's first season at Texas Tech.

Borut All-Big 12

No. 1 singles player Borut Martincevic was the only Red Raider named to the all-Big 12 individual player team by the conference's coaches. Martincevic also debuted in the100 individual players listing in the May 4 ITA poll. He becomes the second Texas Tech player this season to be listed in the top 100. The sophomore from Maribor, Slovenia, has won four of his last five matches including wins over #47 Luis Uribe of Kansas and #59 Paul Martin of Texas. For the spring season Martincevic holds an 12-9 overall record.

Shupe has Strong Season

Another Texas Tech singles player having a great year is Ryan Shupe. The junior holds a 12-8 overall record this spring and defeated #31 Pawl Gajdzik of Baylor on March 20. Shupe was also the first Red Raider to crack the top 100 this season. He debuted at the #88 position on April 6, but after losses at Texas A&M and Texas, fell out in the next poll.

Tough Schedule

Texas Tech had one of the nation's toughest schedules this season. The Red Raiders had 17 of their 24 matches against foes ranked in the top 100. Of the team's nine losses on the season, seven were against teams in the top 25. The other two came to Nebraska who is ranked #64.
