May 26, 2011
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech men's tennis saw its season come to an end on Thursday evening as No. 26 Gonzalo Escobar fell in the second round of singles and 20th-ranked Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia lost their first round doubles match of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
Escobar started the day by winning the first set against No. 21 Evan King (Michigan), 6-3, but then lost the next two sets, 6-1, 6-1. Escobar finishes the season with a 29-16 overall singles record.
"Gonzalo played a good first set but couldn't sustain it. He had a very good year," said head coach Tim Siegel.
In doubles action, Carvalho and Garcia dropped the first set to No. 8 Sebastian Carlsson and Neal Skupski (LSU) but battled back to win the second set 6-3. In the third set, Tech broke serve to go up 3-2 and then held serve to lead 4-2. The Tigers then held serve to put the Red Raiders up 4-3. LSU broke serve to even the match at four all. Carlsson and Skupski then won the next two games to clinch the win.
"Raony and Rafael played very well - good enough to win," Siegel stated. "They led 4-2 in the third set, but LSU played better down the stretch."
Carvalho and Garcia, who played in their second-straight NCAA Doubles Championship together, conclude the year with a 13-13 overall record.
