LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech added another signee to its lineup, as Alexandru Danes has inked to play for the Red Raider tennis team this spring, announced head coach Tim Siegel.
“Alexandru is another player who we feel can definitely make an impact at Texas Tech,” said Siegel. “He had the ability to contribute in both singles and doubles and will bolster our lineup for sure.”
Danes, a native of Puteaux, France, is the fourth signee for the class of 2012-13, joining Louis Fabre (Paris, France), Gabriel Dias (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Felipe Soares (Santos, Brazil).
“I am looking forward to making the best out of this opportunity and to represent Texas Tech well on and off the court,” said Danes. “I wanted to thank my friend and future teammate Louis Fabre for supporting me and encouraging me to take this step and the coaches at Texas Tech for believing in my potential.”
Danes, who will join the team in January, began playing tennis at age six and by the age of 11 had led his team to the finals of the French Team Championships. One year later, Danes helped secure the Boys 12 French Team Championship.
As a junior tennis player, he was consistently ranked in the Top 15 in France in Boys 14s, Boys 16s and Boys 18s. He also won the French Doubles Boys 18 National Championship last year. He has been ranked as high as 367 in the world as a junior by the International Tennis Federation.
“I am very happy that Alexandru made the decision to represent Texas Tech,” said assistant coach Marcelo Ferreira. “He is an extremely talented player with a lot to offer in singles and doubles. His work ethic and his desire to become a professional player will only add to our team and I truly believe that he will be a big contributor to the success of our team for the next few years.”
Danes also saw interest from the University of Florida during his recruiting process.
