QUITO, Ecuador – Gonzalo Escobar, the winningest men’s tennis player in Texas Tech history, has been named to the Ecuadorian Davis Cup Team.

Escobar joins Julio Capozano, Emilio Gomez and Roberto Quiroz on the squad. Ecuador travels to Switzerland on Friday to begin preparation for the World Group playoff with the Swiss, Sept. 13-15 at the Patinoire du Littoral in Neuchatel, Switzerland.

Escobar was named to the squad by team captain Raul Viver. He is the 36th person to played for Ecuador in Davis Cup competition.

“Gonzalo (Escobar) was just out of college but his results and attitude led me to settle on him. The team is motivated and excited. Switzerland will be difficult to face but have to take it as an opportunity,” said Viver.

Switzerland was originally to be led by Roger Federer, however, he announced in May that he decided to take more time off this year to recover physically. The Swiss squad is made up of Stanislas Wawrinka, Marco Chiudinelli, Henri Laaksonen, Michael Lammer.

Escobar, who earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles at Texas Tech, turned professional last month. Since that time, he has reached the semifinals of one ITF Futures event and the finals of another.
