Gonzalo Escobar picked up a huge win for his native Ecuador on Sunday.

Neuchatel, Switzerland Former Red Raider Gonzalo Escobar provided the upset of the Davis Cup World Group Playoffs, as he picked up the lone point for Ecuador with a 6-0, 7-5 in over Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland at the Patinoire du Littoral on Sunday.

Switzerland defeated Ecuador, 4-1, and will advance to 2014 Davis Cup World Group.

Escobar, who is ranked No. 858 in the world, defeated the Swiss’ No. 2 Davis Cup player and the No. 164 player in the world.

Escobar was originally schedule to play doubles on Saturday with Roberto Quiroz for Ecuador, but was pulled from the lineup 30 minutes prior to it starting.

Escobar is the winningest men's tennis player in the history of Texas Tech and earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles. In 2012, Escobar teamed with Raony Carvalho to finish as national finalists in doubles.
