Sept. 27, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech men's tennis player Michael Breler advanced to the semifinals in the A Draw consolation bracket Saturday afternoon in the Baylor HEB Invitational.
Breler began the day with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(6), victory over Fresno State's Mirko Zapletal to advance to face teammate Christian Rojmar, who defeated Jose Zunio of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-1, 1-6, 1-0(6), earlier in the day. Breler would be able to get past Rojmar in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
In the third round of the A Draw, Gonzalo Escobar fell in his lone match of the day to the tournament's third-seeded player, Tulsa's Arnan Brugues. Escobar would take each set to the wire, losing both at 7-5.
James Wilson moved into the semifinals in the B Draw Consolation bracket, defeating Vishnu Rajam of Rice, 6-3, 6-3, and TCU's Kelubia Mabatah, 6-2, 6-2. He will face Michael Dierberger of Wisconsin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
"This was an extremely tough field, and I'm really please with the way we played," Tech head coach Tim Siegel said. "I thought that Raony (Carvalho) played very well, losing to the No. 1 in the country in a close match. Gonzalo also lost to someone in top ten, so it was nice to see both those freshman come out and play well against tough competition. I also thought Michael and Christian played well. We still got some work to do though to get ready for Tulsa next weekend."
Breler and Wilson will be the only Red Raiders in action Sunday as Breler is set to face Chris Chirico of Texas A&M at 8:30 a.m. The winner of the match will either face Zach Nicholas of TCU or Anton Bobytskyi of Oklahoma State at 11 a.m.
