LUBBOCK, TX - Texas Tech's Gonzalo Escobar defeated Rice's Harry Fowler 6-2, 6-1, to become the USTA/ITA Regional singles champion and has earned an automatic berth in the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.

Escobar is the third Red Raider to reach the ITA Regional finals. Bojan Szumanski won the singles title in 2006 and Raony Carvalho reached the finals last season.

Coach Tim Siegel was elated, "What a great day for Gonzalo! He played disciplined, smart, and tough tennis. We're excited to be going to the indoor championships in New York."

The Texas Regional is one of 12 held around the country in the month of October with the singles and doubles champion from each site qualifying for the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The national tournament is slated for Nov. 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, New York.
