Lady Raider Basketball Team Hands Out Annual Awards

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball team honored its own on Monday evening. Alicia Thompson received the Most Valuable Player Award while Sandy Parker was given the Fighting Heart Award. Both honors are voted on by the team.

Thompson finished the 1996-97 season as the team's leading scorer and rebounder. The junior post averaged 23.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. A few of her many accomplishments this season include being nationally ranked in scoring and setting the school record for most points scored in a single game by a junior. (47 points against Texas).

As one of two seniors, Sandy Parker started in 16 of the Lady Raiders 29 games. She averaged 3.0 assists and finished her Lady Raider career in the number seven spot on Tech's All-Time Assists list with 302.

Rene Hanebutt was also recognized, along with Thompson, for being chosen to the Big 12 All-Conference team. Thompson was a first team selection, while Hanebutt was a third team pick.
