Aug. 25, 1997 Thompson, Jones Cup Team Take Silver MedalLUBBOCK, Texas - In the final game of the 1997 R. William Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan, and in a battle of previous unbeatens, the United States women's team had its gold medal hopes dashed after South Korea rallied in the game's final minutes to capture a 76-71 victory and the 1997 gold medal. The setback, the USA's only loss in the seven game tournament, left the Americans 6-1 overall and in possession of the silver medal. The U.S. shot 44.8 percent from the floor overall, while South Korea was slightly more accurate hitting 49.0 percent of its tries. The USA dominated South Korea on the boards by a 38-20 margin, including 12-1 on the offensive glass, but the Americans committed over three times as many turnovers as their opponents. The U.S. was called for 22 turnovers, while South Korea had just seven. Lady Raider Alicia Thompson played only two minutes in the gold medal game. She finished the tour with a field goal percentage of .667, a perfect three-point percentage and a free throw percentage of .75.
