Lady Raider Junior Transfer Wins Appeal from NCAA

Cosby Declared Eligible to Participate

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior transfer Kyna Cosby has been reinstated to participate for the Lady Raider basketball team following an NCAA reversal on an earlier decision that would have prevented her from playing during the fall semester, school officials announced today.

Cosby, a native of Sundown, Texas, was declared ineligible for the fall semester after failing to meet NCAA satisfactory progress regulations. She sat out one season while giving birth to a daughter in 1996 and does not currently meet the NCAA's standards of completing at least 50 percent of her courses toward her major. Texas Tech's appeal during the fall was denied. Today, the school received word that the decision had been reversed and that Cosby had been cleared to participate.

"Upon further consideration and the submission of additional information, the NCAA revisited its decision and decided that the facts warranted an appeal based upon a medical absence waiver," said Texas Tech Associate Athletic Director Robert Burton. "The decision met the spirit of the rule and was in the best interest of the student-athlete."
