Women's Basketball Defeats Grambling, 82-44

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 11-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders (2-0) were supposed to be tested by the Grambling Lady Tiger (0-2). If it was a test, the Lady Raiders passed with an A+.

Tech used a devestating inside-outside game early in the contest to open a gap that the Tigers would never close en route to demolishing Grambling 82-44.

The Lady Raiders have outscored their opponents 168-86 in two games this year.

The Lady Raiders hit five first-half three-pointers, including three in a row at one point early in the contest, to stretch a 5-4 lead to 14-4 with 16:00 minutes in the half. Junior forward Alicia Thompson then scored the next nine points for the Lady Raiders, stretching the lead to 27-11 with less than eight minutes in the half. Thompson finished with a game-high 25 points on 10 of 17 shooting.

The Raider's 2-3 zone defense, meanwhile, was handcuffing the Tigers, limiting Grambling to 16 percent (6-37) shooting in the first half. When the halftime buzzer sounded, the Lady Raiders went to the locker room with a commanding 35-14 lead.

It would only grow in the second half, as the Lady Raiders hit 55 percent of their shots in the second period on the way to scoring 47 points.

The Raiders rotated four post players in the second half, scoring a combined 26 points from the position. Freshman post/forward Keitha Dickerson scored 11 points to lead all post players.

Sophomore guards Rene Hanebutt and Julie Lake scored 14 and 10 points respectively, as the Raiders had four players score in double figures. Hanebutt and Thompson also recorded double-doubles with 12 rebounds apiece, Thompson's second double-double in as many games.

The Lady Raiders out-rebounded the Tigers 51-45 and recorded 22 assists to Grambling's 11.

"I thought one of the biggest factors was the start of the game," said Tech head coach Marsha Sharp. "We were able to knock down some three-pointers early in the game and they came out on our perimeter players a little, which is what we wanted to happen."

Thompson, a pre-season All-America candidate and the team's leading returning scorer, said she doesn't feel pressure to carry the team, though.

"I think now, anyone on the team can be a go-to player. I think there's no pressure on me at all," said Thompson.

The Lady Raiders next travel to Los Angeles where they will play UCLA Friday at 9:30 central time.

"Hopefully, we can take it on the road to UCLA and do some of the same things we've been doing," said Sharp.

A Look At Grambling

The Lady Tigers won their third straight Southwestern Athletic Conference title last season with a 13-1 conference mark. They hope to do the same in the 1996-97 year.

Three starters return to help Grambling accomplish that goal. Senior Tameka Lands, who averaged 11 points in 28 appearances was named the SWAC defensive player of the year. Fredericka Wills, also a senior, averaged 12.4 points in her 20 outings. Sophomore Shiakiea Carter, who averaged 12 points in 28 games and led the SWAC in assists with 154, rounds out the returning three.

Sophomores Demetrice Smith and Ashana Wright are will also return to help out the Lady Tigers. Smith led her team and the SWAC in three point percentage with a mark of .348.

New to the Grambling squad are Wendy Devore, NeKesha Jewell, LaKinya Currie, Felecia James, and Audra Smith.

Devore was an all-state and all-city selection at Houston's Madison High School. Jewell, a product of Grant High School in Colfax, La., was named all-state, all-district, and an honorable mention All-American. At Houston's Clear Lake High School, Smith was named the District 24-5A MVP.

The Lady Raiders have played Grambling only once before. On Dec. 1, 1989, the Lady Tigers defeated Tech 64-67 in the first round of the third annual Lady Raider Classic.
