Raiders Bounce Bruins 95-80

LOS ANGELES, CA -- For the Texas Tech Lady Raiders it was another day at the office. Rene Hanebutt had 27 points and 3 rebounds to lead the women's basketball team to a 95-80 victory and a 3-0 season. The Bruins now 1-1, were unable to catch up to the Lady Raiders during most of the matchup.

Despite the Bruins' fast start, they were unable to keep the lead that changed several times in the first half. U.C.L.A. tried a combination of several defenses including man-to-man and a 2-3 matchup that saw Alicia Thompson all but taken out of the first half.

But the real action came from Tech's one-two punch with sophomore Rene Hanebutt and freshman Melinda Schmucker. Hanebutt took control of the game and played well defensively as well as offensively. Tech limited the Bruins to 41 percent shooting in the first half. Schmucker shook off a shaky start to produce a solid game with a career high 19 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Tech went in at half-time leading 37-31. The Bruins were determined to stop Thompson in the post, but Tech used its bench and several fast breaks to stay ahead.

Sophomore Cara Gibbs was there to help Thompson in the low post. After an unproductive fist half, UCLA went to defend the perimeter shooting in the second half, allowing Gibbs and Thompson more room to score. Thompson finished with 22 points and Gibbs with 10.

"They went towards stopping the post, and when that happens you gotta go somewhere else," said Linden Weese, Assistant Coach. "The bench did a great job."

"It just happened. Thing went really well, and I felt pretty good," said Gibbs. "I'm really glad we got the win."

The Bruins were able to pull within 5 points with 3 minutes remaining, but Tech took charge to finish business by adding 15 points down the stretch.

Tech shot 59 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free-throw line

UCLA shot 49 percent, while Martin and Jackson finished with 32 and 14 points respectively. Keitha Dickerson, playing in front of many family members, and had a good outing. She finished with 5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

Tech now prepares for a Monday night matchup against the North Texas Eagles.
