Lady Raiders Fall To Auburn 70-55

AUBURN, Alabama - The Auburn Lady Tigers (5-0) used runs of 14-0 to begin the game and 17-6 to end the game, and in between the Texas Tech Lady Raiders (5-1) could not make up the difference, falling 70-55 to the No. 25-ranked Tigers.

The Tigers opened the game looking as if they would dominate the No. 8-ranked Raiders, as the first 14 points of the game went to Auburn.

Earlier in the week, Tech head coach Marsha Sharp had predicted that Auburn would be the best defensive team the Lady Raiders played this season. Her prediction was right on the money.

The Lady Raiders, though, refused to throw in the towel early in the game. Junior forward Alicia Thompson scored nine of her team-high 20 points down the first-half stretch, and sophomore guard Julie Lake's long two-point jumper right before the half pulled Tech to a 30-30 tie at the end of the first period.

Everything seemed to be in good shape for the Lady Raiders starting the second half. Freshman guard Melinda Schmucker and sophomore guard Rene Hanebutt hit back-to-back three-pointers as Tech built a slim 36-33 lead with 15:22 left in the game.

An Alicia Thompson layin with 12:53 gave the Raiders their last lead of the game, though, 40-39. Auburn's defense tightened, and the Lady Raiders could not find the basket, scoring only three more field goals the rest of the game.

The Lady Raiders scored only nine points during the next 10 minutes.

The Raider's 2-3 zone defense kept the game tight, for a while anyway. The Tigers had only managed to pull ahead 53-49 with 5:15 left in the game when the Tech offense went completely stagnant. The Lady Raiders failed to score a single point in the next three-plus minutes.

The Tigers ran off eight straight points, and then collected two more when Sharp was whistled for a technical foul with 2:30 left in the game. The two free throws were followed by a three-point play, and the Tigers had their largest lead of the game, 68-49 with less than two minutes to play.

Schmucker finally broke the Tech scoring drought, nailing a three-pointer with 1:30 left to play, but it was too little, too late. Auburn's Tara Williams scored the final two of her game-high 24 points on the last play of the contest, sending the Lady Raiders to their first loss of the season.

Auburn limited the Lady Raiders to 31.5 percent shooting and out-rebounded the Raiders 47-38. Auburn, meanwhile, hit 43.9 percent of their shots.

Tech's 50 points were the fewest scored since a 44-81 loss at Tennessee on Nov. 27, 1995.
