No. 11 Texas Tech Hands New Mexico Its First Defeat

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 11-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders wasted little time in putting an end to the New Mexico Lobos nine-game season-opening win streak.

The Lady Raiders (7-2), behind 16 first-half points by All-America candidate Alicia Thompson, rolled to a 66-35 victory over the previously undefeated Lobos (9-1).

Four of the Lady Raider starters scored early buckets as Tech opened up an 8-3 lead. A three-point basket by Jodi Cory, her second of the game, cut the lead back to two.

The Lady Raiders went on a 10-4 run soon after, and led 18-10 at the 9:16 mark of the first half. But Thompson scored ten straight points and Julie Lake nailed a three-pointer as the Raiders continued to roll, 26-15 at the 4:57 mark.

That would mark the end of the Lobos' first-half scoring. A Thompson bucket at the 2:04 mark would, in fact, mark the end of all first-half scoring, giving the Lady Raiders a 32-15 halftime lead.

It was more of the same in the second half.

Thompson scored Tech's first eight points of the second half as the Lady Raiders opened up a 25-point lead, 51-26, at the 9:09 mark of the second half.

The Lobos, meanwhile, could not get on track offensively. Freshman Sonya Bryant, who led the Lobos with 15 points, scored UNM's final points of the game on two free-throws with 3:16 left to play.

That made it 58-35. Tech senior Sandy Parker scored the final points of the game on a layup as time ran out, and the Lady Raiders had their seventh win of the season.

Thompson scored a game-high 26 points, while Tech freshman Keitha Dickerson scored 13 points off the bench. In all, nine of Tech's players scored.

The Lady Raiders shot a sizzling 51.8 percent for the game, holding the Lobos to 19.1 percent, including an abysmal 15.2 percent shooting in the first half.

The Lobos leading scorer, junior Abby Garchek, entered the game averaging 16.6 points per game. Garchek did not score a point against the Lady Raiders' tenacious 2-3 zone defense.

"I was really proud of our effort coming off a holiday," said Tech head coach Marsha Sharp after the game.

The Lady Raiders will get little rest before hosting the Rice Owls Monday night in the final non-conference game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
