Texas Tech Defeats Baylor, 75-58

WACO, Texas - The Texas Tech Lady Raiders (9-2, 1-0) looked as if they might run the Baylor Lady Bears (7-4, 0-1) out of the Ferrell Center early in the first Big 12 women's basketball game in Tech history. But it took a second-half surge to overcome a late first-half Bear rally, and the Raiders went on to win 75-58.

The Raiders scored the games first 11 points, and were up 14-2 when freshman guard Melinda Schmucker was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws.

The Baylor Bears, though, refused to go quietly.

The Bears strung together a 13-5 run that was capped by LaToya Ellis' first three-pointer. The Raider lead was down to 19-15 with less than 10 minutes to play. A layin by Tech post Crystal Boles pushed the lead to 21-15, and guard Rene Hanebutt nailed a three-pointer moments later to push the lead to seven at 24-17.

Freshman forward Keitha Dickerson scored two more buckets for the Raiders, but Baylor scored 10 points, including two more Ellis three-pointers, and cut the halftime lead to 28-27 Tech.

Tech's 28 first-half points marked the second-fewest points scored by the Lady Raiders in the first half this season, trailing only the 27 points they scored against Tennessee.

The first minute of the second half seemed to indicate a back-and-forth ballgame would ensue. Hanebutt canned a 15-foot jumper to push the lead to three, but Nicole Parmer answered with a three-pointer to tie the game at 30 apiece.

That's as close as the Bears would come to a win.

Schmucker sparked a 14-2 run with a three-pointer. Tech's go-to forward Alicia Thompson scored seven of her game-high 22 points during the run, and the score was 44-32 by the 14-minute mark of the second half. And it wouldn't end there.

The Lady Raiders continued to pound the Bears on offense, while limiting them defensively. By the time Dickerson scored the last of her 12 points with 3:30 left to play, the lead was 69-49 and the Raiders were rolling.

The Lady Raiders, led by Thompson, shot 52.2 percent for the game while limiting the Bears to 35.9 percent shooting. The Raiders also destroyed the Bears on the boards, grabbing 44 compared with Baylor's 27. Thompson and Dickerson each had eight rebounds to pace the Lady Raiders.

Hanebutt scored 19 points, followed by a season-high 11 points by Boles. The Lady Raiders hit six of 10 three-point attempts and connected on 21 of 27 shots from the charity stripe.

Ellis led the Bears with 15 points, including four three-pointers, and the Bears forced 22 Raider turnovers in the losing effort.

The Lady Raiders return home Wednesday, Jan. 8 to face the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
