Red Raiders Defeat Kansas State, 76-61

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 14-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders and the Kansas State Wildcats battled to a virtual standstill for fully 30 minutes in front of approximately 6,000 fans in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Then Alicia Thompson took over.

Thompson scored 14 of her game-high 25 points in the game's final 10 minutes, leading the Lady Raiders (11-4, 3-2) to a 76-61 victory over the Wildcats (8-6, 1-3).

The game started slowly for the Raiders. After two early buckets by Thompson had given Tech a 4-0 lead, the Wildcats ran off eight unanswered points, including back-to-back three pointers by Missy Decker and Andria Jones, to take an 8-4 lead.

A bucket by sophomore guard Rene Hanebutt cut the KSU lead to two, but a jumper by Jones and a three-pointer by Angie Finkes extended the lead to seven, 13-6.

The Lady Raiders cut the lead back down to three on buckets by Julie Lake and Thompson, but the Wildcats responded with six straight points to take a 19-10 lead at the 11:40 mark of the first half.

Three-pointers by Lake and Melinda Schmucker sparked the Lady Raiders to an 11-4 run that cut the Wildcat lead to two at 23-21 with 7:12 left to play in the first half.

The Wildcats pushed the lead back to four, but couldn't withstand a stretch run by the Lady Raiders. Thompson tied the game at 29 apiece with 1:27 to play on a three-point play when she was fouled on a jumper and made the ensuing free throw.

Two free throws by Hanebutt seconds later gave the Lady Raiders their first lead in almost 17 minutes at 31-29. The Wildcats could only muster a single free throw before the half, and the Lady Raiders went to the locker room with a 31-30 lead.

The Wildcats took only 12 seconds to regain the lead in the second half, overtaking the Lady Raiders 32-31 when Finkes nailed a jumper. The two teams traded buckets for the next four minutes until a jumper by freshman forward Keitha Dickerson gave the Raiders a 39-38 lead with 16:12 left in the game. It was a lead the Raiders would not lose.

Still, the Lady Raiders led only 45-44 with 10:50 left in the game.

That's when Hanebutt found an opening on the outside for a three-pointer to make the score 48-44, and Thompson followed that with a jumper from the free-throw stripe to stretch the lead to six, 50-44.

The Wildcats got no closer.

The Lady Raiders exploded for 26 points in the game's final 10 minutes, including Thompson's 12, to nip any planned Kansas State comeback in the bud. The Lady Raiders shot a fevered 60.7 percent in the second half and 52.7 percent for the game.

Thompson led the Raiders in scoring, followed by Hanebutt with 18 (including eight of 10 shooting from the free throw stripe), Lake with 12 and Dickerson with 11. Junior post Crystal Boles blocked eight shots on the defensive side of the ball for the Raiders.

The Wildcats shot 40.6 percent for the game, and were led in scoring by Jones who had 19. Finkes contributed 16 and Decker scored 10 for the Wildcats in the losing effort.

The Lady Raiders were out-rebounded 40-30.

"If I hadn't been coaching today, I would have loved to watch the game," said Tech head coach Marsha Sharp. "Fortunately, we matched their effort."

"Alicia [Thompson] really shot the ball well. She took the game over midway through the second half and they didn't have anyone to contain her."

The Lady Raiders will be looking for some retribution when they travel to Stillwater, Okla. Wednesday to face the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The Cowgirls defeated the Raiders 78-56 in Lubbock January 8, handing Tech it's worst home loss during the 90s. Gametime is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
