Texas Tech Rally Silences Aggies

By Garrett McKinnon

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - G. Rollie White Coliseum on the Texas A&M campus is known as the 'Holler House.' It has never been an easy place to play for opposing teams.

That didn't matter to the No. 15 Texas Tech Lady Raiders as they overcame a 10-point first-half deficit and registered a 75-60 road win over the A&M Aggies in the final conference road game of the season for Tech (18-7, 10-5).

The Aggies (9-16, 3-13), led by Amy Yates' three first half three-pointers, pulled to an early 10-point lead over the Raiders. The Raiders, though, scraped back and tied the game at 29-29 at halftime.

The game was back-and-forth for the first four minutes of the second half, with the Aggies maintaining a 37-36 lead with 15:50 left in the game. But Crystal Boles put Tech back in the lead for good with a short jumper, and Sandy Parker hit her first three-pointer of the season, sparking a 9-0 run which left Tech leading 45-39 with 13:10 left to play.

Rene Hanebutt scored her first points of the evening on a three with 9:30 left that put the Lady Raiders up 52-41. The Aggies refused to lay down, though, fighting to within five points on a free throw by Jennifer Burrows that cut the lead to 57-52 with 4:48 left in the game.

Freshman Melinda Schmucker swung the momentum back to Tech with a driving layin, sparking a 7-0 run that was capped by Julie Lake's three-pointer that made the score 64-52 at the 2:50 mark.

Alicia Thompson, bottled up with double- and triple-teams most of the evening after scoring 39 points against the Lady Longhorns on Feb. 22, finally broke loose late in the game, notching seven of Tech's final 11 points. Hanebutt hit all four of her free-throw attempts in the game's final minutes, and the Raiders moved a game closer to their eighth consecutive 20-win season.

Thompson scored a game-high 20 points for the Raiders. The Aggie double-teams left Boles free and she responded with a season-high 16 points. Lake scored 11 points and Hanebutt 10 for the Raiders, while freshman Keitha Dickerson tallied nine points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Aggies were led by Prissy Sharpe and Burrows, both of whom scored 12 points. Melissa Rollerson added 10 and Yates nine. Yates, though, did not score in the second half.

For the game, the Raiders shot 45 percent from the field, hitting 4-of-12 three-point attempts. The Aggies shot 34 percent for the game.

The two teams shot an identical 15-of-25 from the free-throw line. The Aggies missed seven of their last 12 attempts from the charity stripe.

The Raiders grabbed 44 rebounds to 42 for the Aggies.

The Lady Raiders return to Lubbock on Saturday for the final regular-season game of the year against the Missouri Tigers. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
