Lady Raiders Rock Zala Volan of Hungary

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Junior Alicia Thompson scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Texas Tech women's basketball team to a 69-58 exhibition win over Zala Volan of Hungary Thursday night in front of an announced attendance of 7,369 fans at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.

Freshman Keitha Dickerson added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Raiders, who were playing their first exhibition game of the season. Tanya Horvathne led Zala Volan with 22 points, while Laura Nitulescu grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

"I thought we played a pretty typical exhibition game tonight," said Texas Tech head coach Marsha Sharp. "There were a lot of bright sports for our team and we went through a lot of situations that were great for us to take back to practice and work on.

"Alicia got off to exactly the kind of start that we had hoped she would. And our two freshmen, Melinda Schmucker and Keitha Dickerson, made some great decisions on both ends of the floor. They really gave our fans a glimpse of the next four years to come."

The Lady Raiders held Zala Volan to just 35 percent shooting from the floor and limited the Hungarians to just 2-of-3 from the free throw stripe. Tech shot 44 percent from the floor and 74 percent from the free throw line in the game.

Texas Tech is in action next on Saturday, Nov. 16 in its final exhibition game of the season against the Lithuanian National Team at 6 p.m. in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Tickets are available by calling (806) 742-4412.
