Melinda Pharies is in her first season as a student assistant after finishing a stellar playing career for the Lady Raiders.
Pharies, a native of Nazareth, Texas, started all 33 games last year for the Lady Raiders and finished her career as Tech's all-time career leader in assists with 603. During her time as a Lady Raider, Pharies helped lead Tech to three Big 12 regular-season championships and two Big 12 Tournament titles. Last year, Texas Tech advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Pharies was also a Big 12 honorable mention selection in 1999-00. She currently holds the NCAA Tournament record for most assists in a single-game with 17 vs. Grambling during the 1997-98 season. Pharies was also a first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection as a senior.
Pharies graduated in 1996 from Nazareth High School and will receive her bachelor of arts degree in education with a specialization in special education in May 2001.
Pharies and her husband, Chet, are expecting their first child in March.
