LUBBOCK, Tx - The 6th ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders' defense suffocated 14th ranked Iowa State in the first half of Wednesday night's contest, holding the Cyclones to nine first-half points, to win the Big 12 showdown 71-47 in front of a capacity crowd of 8,174 at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
The Lady Raiders built a 28-9 halftime lead by tallying nine steals and four blocked shots, and holding Iowa State to 11 percent shooting from the fiel. Melinda Schmucker and Keitha Dickerson combined for 16 points and seven steals to spark Texas Tech in the opening period.
The Lady Raiders' leading scorer Angie Braziel was held to two points in the first half, but finished with a team-high 14.
Scmucker was the only other Lady Raider to reach double digits in scoring with 10 points to go along with four assists and four steals. Dickerson led the team with nine rebounds.
Iowa State's Desiree Francis led all scorers in the game with 16 points on the night.
The Lady Raiders go on the road on Saturday for another crucial Big 12 match-up with Kansas.
