Lady Raiders vs. Missouri

February 5, 2012

Texas Tech Head Coach Kristy Curry

On sweeping a team

“I mean it’s very difficult to do in this league, the thing about it is how hard we play defensively. When you can hold someone to 39 shots and you get 65, we’ve been at our best day when we’ve defended at that level but the energy and the effort on the defensive end really sets the tone for us, good things will happen.”

On the run in the first half

“Well I know there for a while we held them, I think about the 10 minute mark at the first half was pretty impressive as far as our gap pressure and what we were trying to do and great help, and great energy by our posts by our post by keeping their feet alive and swimming through, just a great team defensive effort and when we can do that great things our going to happen at the other end.”

On winning the two out of the last three games

“Well it’s big just because they’ve worked so hard, these kids our confident they believe in what they’re doing everyday they’re together, we have no conflicts, we have no drama, we have no problems, we are in the Big 12 and we’ve got understand that consistency we need to have from our free throw shooting tonight to how hard we played on the defensive end I thought our focus was very good and we have to be consistent with our focus, it’s not what’s across the other team’s chest it’s what is across ours and how we need to play the game.”

On converting off Missouri’s turnovers

“Well it’s important you always want to make sure you get to the foul line and make the other team pay, we feel like we can get that turnover if the defense is a little out of sync but it’s just a good effort today and we’ve got to be able to do this back to back to back. You play in November to play in December and December prepares you for January and January prepares you for February and February is where it matters because that’s going to get you to March or not each of those months are going to get you to where you want to go now we have to understand the importance of February and I don’t think there is any doubt of that it’s not like we are waking up everyday and mess up.”

Texas Tech Player Quotes

Kierra Mallard

On back and how she feels so far

“I’ve just been tying to get my conditioning just try to find my players, my teammates, and just try to be a person who scores or do my defensive job.”

On her energy coming off the bench

“I just want my team to win and go far I don’t care if I start or come off the bench I just want us to win.”

Casey Morris

On getting the win

“It was big I just think we need to keep the momentum up. Every game is important every game we want it to be a win for us to keep playing defense like that, Christine (Hyde) had five steals, five assists, we had 11 steals as a team so I think defense was a big part of it tonight and I think if we just continue then we will have success.”

On Tech’s defensive effort

“It was really big, but I mean we had 40 rebounds all together, so that’s pretty, good. I mean I just think we worked hard and it shows from the stats that we put in work tonight and got the win so that’s all that matters. I feel like we hustled and rebounded and it showed.”

Missouri Head Coach Robin Pingeton

On the overall game

Well, I tell you what, I really felt like out of the gates it was a really good game, very competitive. Both teams were playing really well, I feel like Tech got a little more physical that second part of the first half. We didn’t respond very well to that physical style of play. I am sure it is on everybody’s scouting report in the country, when you start to get a little more physical our post players are going to float a little bit more on the perimeter instead of battling through that physical play inside. I think the same thing happened to our perimeter kids, we just had a hard time getting the ball inside with Christine (Flores), BreAnna Brock and that is a credit to both their post players and their perimeter defense. We made a run in the second half and felt like we got a little bit more aggressive and played through that physical style of play. You are not going to beat too many teams with 26 turnovers; we make it so dang hard on ourselves. We just don’t have the veteran players and the leadership. I don’t mean that in a negative way, but players that have that veteran experience, that have the poise. When you cut it to within 14, with the ball, with quite a bit of time left, you have to understand the importance of the poise that you’ve got to have. You’ve got to play aggressive, and it’s got to be attack mode, but you have to play within yourself too.

On Tech’s post play

I think Tech did a tremendous job with their post defense, with their three-quarter front. We had some opportunities to get in, but our post players have got to do a better job of really getting squared up to the passers. I think it is a combination of both. I think Tech played really good defense, and I think we got a little bit soft with our post-ups.

On offensive rebounds in the first half

That is extremely hard to overcome. They did a tremendous job of pounding the boards every possession. When we are giving up 27 points off turnovers and 12 off offensive rebounds; that has kind of been our Achilles heel all year long. Give them a ton of credit, they played hard. I think Kristy is doing a tremendous job with this program. They’ve got some awfully good athletes in here.
