Lady Raiders vs. Kansas

February 21, 2012

Texas Tech Head Coach Kristy Curry

On why she used 10 different players in the first half

“I think energy is the best point there we were trying to get something established defensively and wasn’t pleased defensively, it just looked like we didn’t do a good job on the defensive end, so we tried to go to the bench a little bit and try and get a spark here and there and we’ve had that happen from our bench throughout the year but we just weren’t able to establish anything defensively.”

On what changed at the 12 minute mark in the second half, defensively for Tech

“We were just able to get some stops and they missed some shots, whether it was good defense or they just missed a look we were able to get a rebound better and run out of it and get some easy transition baskets, get to the foul line more the second half, again we weren’t able to sustain that and that’s what is disappointing about it, so you have to credit Kansas.”

On Kansas getting open looks at the three

“It just looked like we weren’t rotating very well from help to back into denial. A lot of it had to do with Angel Goodrich’s play, I thought she totally controlled the basketball game and anytime you can have eight assists and two turnovers, she did a great job on her penetration shots and when we did help on penetration she found the opened person, so much of the game was controlled by her and it was an absolutely outstanding effort in every regard from her end tonight.”

On what went wrong offensively for Tech

“I thought we missed a lot of easy looks, and you just have to be able to finish some shots and we weren’t able to finish shots, I thought Chynna Brown really did a good job of being aggressive and getting some looks and making some baskets and shooting at a high percentage, but beyond that we really didn’t do the best job, three for eight, three for 10 that makes it hard to win.”

On the message to the team after the game

“Disappointed, our backs are against the wall and we have to fight, fight, fight and continue to come out everyday and work as hard as we can.”

Chynna Brown

On if she shoots the ball more when her teammates aren’t making shots

“Sometimes, I still encourage them and if they’re open and calling for the ball I still try and get the ball to them in some way and I just keep talking to them and tell them you knock the next one down just to forget about that shot.”

On how this loss feels

“Everybody hates to lose, so losing at home just a bad feeling, hate it, just looking forward to the next the next few games and getting back to working on what we need to work on.”

On what looks Kansas was giving her

“I was just able to come off the screens hard and if I’m open I shot the ball and didn’t think about it too much and just trying to be aggressive and getting to the goal anytime I could, I was just trying to drive the ball.”

Kansas Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson

On the win

It has been a tough little stretch here. About 12 days ago we were ranked in the top 25, and slipped. With Carolyn’s injury, and just a gut wrenching loss the other day to a rival in a game that we all felt disappointed that we came out so soft. We talked about this being a stare down. They weigh in and stare at each other, we are all staring at each other. We are both staring at each other because we’ve got to beat you, and the other one is saying ‘we got to beat you.’ I just couldn’t be more proud of how tough we were. I though Cece’s (Harper) energy to come in, and how hard she played and plays she made, and played with tremendous confidence. That becomes infectious and contagious. I think Angel Goodrich is one of the best point guards in the country, and I think the assists of Tania Jackson broke the single season assist record at Kansas. If there is any a player due to hit a three it would be Tania, she’s been about 2-18 here lately.

On threes

That was just busted plays to Angel, a lot of that Angel drove it on the baseline. In a zone offense it is not the primary look, we always talk about in our league, very rarely do you score in primary looks. It is mostly secondary, you’ve got to go make a play.

On defense

I thought we rushed them a little bit, I thought our on ball screen defense was good. There were some tough twos in there, Tania got a big block on Mallard in the middle of the rim. Not easy looks when you get the foul on the three because they passed it to Mallard and Angel (Goodrich) steps back and gets under it. Then she realizes, ‘what have I done? I’m gonna let her shot one.’ Then get back at it too aggressively and they get to the free throw line. I thought we were active and played together.

On Chynna Brown’s 21 points

Now Chynna got into us, she tore us up. Cece had her for a while, then we put Angel on her, then we went back to Cece because we didn’t have an answer for that kid at all. She really, really hit big shots and used screens really well, and they screened really well for her.

Kansas Player Cece Harper

On win

I think it was just a great win after losing. We all want to win so bad for Carolyn, since we can’t play with her we are just going to win for her. And Aishah (Sutherland) being a senior. It is just a great feeling.

On end of the game being close

All we really said in the huddle was that we were really going to play for each other, just stay up and stay confident. Just to keep going with what is working.
