LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Alicia Thompson had 39 points and 11 rebounds Friday to lead top-seeded Texas Tech to a 87-75 victory over Grambling State in the first round of the NCAA tournament's Midwest Regional.

Tech (26-4) led by 21 points early in the second half before the Lady Tigers (23-7) whittled the gap to 76-70 at the 3:36 mark. Thompson scored seven of the Lady Raiders' next 10 points to finally dispatch Grambling.

Thompson scored many of her baskets on feeds from Melinda Schmucker, who tied an NCAA tournament record with 17 assists.

Grambling's Demetrice Smith hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points. Shiakiea Carter added 14.

Seemingly unshaken by Tech's raucous sellout home crowd, Grambling pulled within 56-47 at the 12:37 mark and stayed in striking distance until a late 8-1 Tech spurt.

Rene Hanebutt was 4-for-6 from 3-point range and finished with 17 points for Tech.
