WNIT Third Round Quotes

Lady Raiders vs. San Diego

March 22, 2012

Texas Tech Head Coach Kristy Curry

On if Monique Smalls’ injury rattled the team

“I’m sure it did, but when that happens you have to let it rally you and I think we tried to a little bit of both back and forth but you just have to stay as positive as possible and we weren’t able to rally and instead we were a little more rattled.”

On what happened from a shooting standpoint

“You know what, when you miss 46 shots and 13 free throws and you come and you’re aggressive and we’re trying real hard you just tell them to keep shooting it, but we have to work on our mental toughness as far as when we miss a shot, don’t focus on missing but focus on making the next one and just staying positive with it. It’s kind of the problem that’s plagued us at times throughout the year, it’s not a lack of effort sometimes you just can’t get the ball to go in.”

On what the team needs to improve on for next season

“Just continue to grow and improve and know that each one of them individually, whether it’s working defensively or working on you’re shot or just getting in the gym just continuing to get better and individually it’s the time of year you get better in the off season and the summer you get better individually because that’s how you impact your team in the fall because you’re so limited with your team activities whether it’s conditioning or eating habits, if that’s your area, or whether it’s getting in the job and working the gun and obviously we have a lot of work we can do on our shooting and free throws.”

On not being able to convert and gain momentum

“We had a three I think that would have cut it to two or a two that would cut it to four and we got the steal on the press there that time and would have cut it to two but we just couldn’t get a make, but again they were able to make a few more shots then we were and that was the difference in the game.”

On what the junior class this year needs to improve on for next season

“Their leadership and their vocal ability, Mo (Monique Smalls)has to become more vocal and Casey (Morris) and Chynna (Brown) and when we have adversity they’ve got to continue to work on their toughness and fighting through adversity. Our junior class has to mature and grow up and accept responsibility and be really good leaders, it’s on their shoulders.”

Texas Tech Player Quotes

Senior Jordan Barncastle

On how frustrating it is losing her last collegiate game

“It’s frustrating, it’s not a ideal ending nobody wants to end their career with a loss but just try to stay positive and hopefully we have some learning and growing memories and moments for the team to have next year to make them better for next year, some experience.”

On reflecting on her time playing for Texas Tech

“It’s been an awesome four years, I wouldn’t trade it for the world, I’ve learned and grown into the woman that I’ve become because of this place and these people here and this community, it was good.

On what she will do now

“I’m applying to med school, so I won’t find out until late in the fall about that and welcome to the real world.”

Junior Shauntal Nobles

On getting 19 rebounds

“Honestly, we were missing a lot of shots and I knew I had to step up and crash the boards hard and try and get us as many offensive chances as possible.”

On what she’s learned from this season to take into next season

“Just got to be consistent and bring tremendous energy every single time you go on the floor, I mean they brought that tonight and that’s why they won and I got to give it all to them, so tough loss.”

San Diego Head Coach Cindy Fisher

On the win

“Well first of all I just want to say what an incredible fight it was with both teams. My heart absolutely goes out to Monique, more than anything. I certainly hope she is ok, that is tough at any point. So, first of all, that is really most important now. Again Dominique Conners, Amy Kame, I just thought our whole team put up a great effort tonight. We played them pretty tough, obviously at San Diego. So we had a lot to learn from that game. We felt like there were some thing that we could do differently in from that game to make this one a little bit better for us. Which happened, I was just proud of the way this group executed and they have so much will in them. It starts right here with our captain Dominique.”

On improvements from last game against Tech

Well we didn’t do a great job the first time of keeping them in front of us. We really let Monique (Smalls) and Casey Morris. All of them kind of get by us, so we try to do a good job of keeping them in front of us. (Jordan) Barncastle obviously stepped up a lot since conference play, just making sure we didn’t let her get going on us.

On guard play

“I thought they did a great job, I thought our zone helped us a lot. Just keeping us in front, and making them take some shots that maybe they normally wouldn’t take. And they didn’t let them (Tech guards) get inside the paint, they are so good when they get inside the paint. And they can punch and kick to Barncastle and dump to their post players. I thought our guards just did an awesome job of keeping them in front.”

San Diego Player Quotes

Amy Kame

On Dominique Conners leaving the game with foul trouble

“Yeah, I didn’t have the best first half. And I knew that when Domo (Dominique Conners) goes out and she is our leader on the floor. It is tough for us sometimes. I knew that I just needed to be aggressive. Coach was just telling me to get to the basket. At first I didn’t see that it was open but, in that stretch when Domo was off I knew I needed to be aggressive and it was just open.”

Dominique Conners

On getting fouled at the rim in the second half

“The first half we didn’t really shoot too many free throws. I think we didn’t shoot any at all. We are definitely a team that gets to the free throw line, we definitely want to be on the aggressive side of things. Texas Tech they came out and went straight to the free throw line. We knew that is what we wanted to do. The first couple of plays I knew, get somebody to get their guards in a little bit of foul trouble. We got to the line and just finish at the line.”
