Recap

Texas Tech - Angelo State Postgame Press Conference

Nov. 4, 2013 - United Spirit Arena - Lubbock, Texas

Candi Whitaker

Texas Tech Head Coach

Opening Statement

“I’m proud that we played better in the second half. Saw some good things. We’ve got to get better in a lot of areas. We saw those and we know that and we’ll continue to work on it. Thought both of these young two ladies (Minta Spears and Amber Battle) played well. Obviously, Minta shot the ball extremely well and Amber really made a huge difference the second half rebounding it, scoring it, really important that they both stay out of foul trouble.”

On 3-point shooters

“We shot the ball well from behind the mark. Obviously Minta leading the charge, I mean 6 of 10 is exceptional. But we had several people step up and hit them. I thought Marina Lizarazu played well. I mean when Amber can go 2-for-3 from three — that’s a good night you know so, that surprised me a little bit. I think we shot better from three than I anticipated.”

On leadership from Amber and Minta

“Absolutely. Minta is a natural leader. She’s someone who is extremely vocal in practice, she understands the game well so she has the ability to help others that maybe don’t understand things as well, maybe get to the right spot and understand timing. Amber is just a tremendous athlete as you saw. She has the ability to elevate and rebound. She has to be a playmaker for us. They’re both just great young women too. So when they’re hearts in the right place, they’re doing the right things on and off the floor they naturally have the ability to lead the team.”

Amber Battle

Junior Guard

On her double double in the second half

“Just my mind set, you know going out, being aggressive, being smart with my fouls. And my teammates found me so when they did I just shot the ball.”

On Shauntal and Kellyn and Haley’s performances

“We need them to have our backs when they drive by and they were there, and you know block shots, get rebounds. So that was really crucial when they stepped up and helped us out.”

On expectations on playing a lower division school

“We need to perform every game regardless of the division of the school. This game is going to get us prepared for the next as the next game is going to get us prepared for New Mexico. So we can’t look at what division they’re in, we just have to go out and play our best.”

Minta Spears

Freshman guard

On shooting from the 3-point-line

“There’s a lot of preparation going in to this game but for me its been this whole past year, because the last time I got to play was this game last year. So I’ve just been working really hard and trying to prepare the same way for each game.”

On communication with the team

“I mean we communicated but we still have a lot to work on. There were moments that we were silent and stuff on the defensive end. We’re just working on that every day in practice. And coach is really big about doing the little things right, so we’re going to keep working on that.”

On clicking with teammates

“It was nice. We were just playing basketball. It was fun. It was nice to have Amber in the second half out of foul trouble. It was just fun. We were just clicking and just playing ball and finding each other and making shots.”
