"We showed great poise tonight," said Curry, who won her fourth season opener at Tech on the road and first in Tempe. "We stayed positive and stayed together. We talk about winning every four minutes `cause you know they're going to make a run and you just have to sustain that. Thankfully, ours were longer."
Tech (1-0) quickly overcame its only deficit of the game early on after Arizona State jumped ahead 9-5 in the opening minutes, thanks in part to a 10-2 run.
The Lady Raiders would extend their lead to 11 points after halftime before the Sun Devils began mounting a comeback to close within one point at 42-41 with 11:47 to play.
Then it all went in favor of the Lady Raiders.
"We got a little too comfortable," Morris said. "We just had to get in that mode and put them away."
Morris hit a pair of free throws followed by a layup by Patterson and then a steal by Smalls and another layup from Kelsi Baker to open a 15-0 run that put away the Sun Devils for good.
Arizona State (0-1) gave up 22 turnovers - including 16 steals by Tech - as the Lady Raiders scored 22 points off turnovers and 12 on fast breaks.
"We stayed together," Smalls said. "It's like I always say - defense makes the offense better ... Next thing you know there's a steal, then there's another steal, and another steal and then our offense is able to get set up and we were able to keep the lead."
The Lady Raiders hit the road for a second consecutive game at 8 p.m., Thursday against New Mexico (1-0) in Albuquerque before heading home to play Lipscomb on Sunday to start a seven-game homestand.
