LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Lady Raiders strolled to a season opening victory Sunday afternoon, dismissing University of Texas-Arlington 71-47 at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.

Angie Braziel led the way for Texas Tech with a team high 22 points. Keitha Dickerson and Rene Hanebutt each scored 12 points for the Lady Raiders.

The Mavericks moved within six points in the second half before the Lady Raiders went on a tear to ensure a win in their home opener. Tech outscored UT-Arlington 15-0 in a four-minute stretch from the 10-minute mark to the six-minute mark of the second half, opening up a 25 point lead.

After topping 100 points in two preseason exhibition games, Texas Tech players felt they suffered from a lack of focus at the beginning of the game Sunday afternoon.

"I think we came out expecting things to go our way a little more than they did," Julie Lake said. "I don't think we played as hard as we shoud have."

Texas Tech Coach Marsha Sharp said she was happy to get the win, but sees room for improvement.

"I was disappointed in our focus today," Sharp said. "Our free throw shooting in the first half, I felt, was an indication of that. I think we settled in and got some good looks late in the game. On the whole our defense was pretty solid."

Dickerson, Hanebutt and Melinda Schmucker combined for 14 assists for Texas Tech, while Aleah Johnson led the team in rebounds with six in her regular season debut with Texas Tech.

Jennifer Boniol scored a game high 24 points for the Mavericks.

The Lady Raiders host Hampton University on Tuesday at 7 p.m., then go on the road for a three-game stretch versus Old Dominion, SMU and Stanford.
