ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Monique Smalls scored a career-high 22 points but New Mexico outlasted Texas Tech in the second half to pull away with a 65-61 win on Thursday night at The Pit.
New Mexico (2-0) used its toughness on the boards and outrebounded Texas Tech 42-33, resulting in 18 second-chance points.
"We're at our best when we have balance," Tech head coach Kristy Curry said. "At Arizona State on Sunday, we had that. Tonight we didn't."
Tech (1-1) pulled within four points, twice, and even three points with 1:07 left following Smalls' free throw. She missed the second but would steal the ball back before senior guard Christine Hyde turned it back over - the team's 18th in the game.
Smalls added a career-high eight field goals to her 22 points and had four steals for the second game in a row while fellow senior starters Casey Morris and Chynna Brown struggled from the field, going a combined 0-for-11.
Senior Christine Hyde tacked on eight free throws to her one field goal, scoring 10 points while leading the team in rebounds for the second consecutive game with seven.
Bryce Owens' 3-pointer on the next possession made it a two possession game the rest of the way. Owens and Deeva Vaughn each finished with 15 points to lead four Lobos in double digits.
"We put ourselves in a position to win near the end, but its disappointing," Curry said. "Our seniors have to step up next game and have more about them than what they had tonight."
Sophomore point guard Amber Battle, playing in front of hometown crowd for the first time, had a career night as well. She scored 12 points off the bench and played her most minutes in a game (22).
The Lady Raiders return to the court at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday to play their home opener against Lipscomb (0-2) to begin a seven-game homestand. That includes three games in three days over Thanksgiving weekend during the annual Basketball Travelers Invitational at United Spirit Arena.
