Candi Whitaker

Texas Tech Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Proud that we continued to fight when people made runs, and that we came out with a win. Thought Amber Battle put her team on her back and made huge plays and a string of plays to give us more of a lead and we just got to continue to find ways to be better defensively and keep people out of the paint and getting to the rim so easily.”

On shooting 70% in the second half

“We wanted to be aggressive and get to the rim and felt like if we would execute we could get good looks and I think we did a good job of getting high percentage shots in a lot of the game. I thought we missed a lot of easy ones in the first half, some put backs, and some stuff at the rim or some open jumpers that you got to knock down, but did a good job of getting to the rim and a lot of that was Amber in the second half finding ways to make easy plays around the basket.”

On the press that Grambling State showed in second half

“We handled that, we had numbers at the other end, so, absolutely, that was one of the reasons, one of the areas that helped us get to the rim. And when we got the ball in Amber’s hands, she was able to make a play and put us in a 2-on-1 situation.”

On Ivonne CookTaylor

“I was so excited to see her, I felt like she looked more comfortable, she was in there making plays. You know, Ivonne is really athletic and can jump and did a nice job of getting boards, 11 boards in 17 minutes is very good.”

On playing zones

“We played a little zone in the first half and then we played a lot more in the second. We showed two different zones in the second half - actually showed three different zones in the second half, so we have multiple defenses that we need to keep people out of rhythm and mix things up and I thought that helped us in the second half.”

On the New York trip

“We’re excited, you know. It will be a great trip and I’m excited. I don’t know how many of them have been to New York but the first time I went was with the Lady Raiders and it was really a great trip and there’s great competition up there, and then we’ll also have some fun while we’re up there.”

On their GSU’s run right before halftime

“I think we got to take care of the basketball we were, we turned it over some there in that spin when they made a run, which put us in transition defense and gave up some easy baskets in transition defense so, talked about executing and being aggressive on offense but taking care of the basketball and just getting back to what we need to do on both ends, made a few adjustments defensively.”

On Marina’s behind the back dribbles

“That one she was coming down the middle and wraps it around to the left block, yeah caught me off guard because I can’t do that. So I was impressed with that one.”

Amber Battle

Senior Guard

On 3 point plays that started the run

“I do remember that. After I made that play we just gathered our team and said this is it we have to go on a run now, so we knew after that play we couldn’t turn back we had to really attack them.”

On teamwork

“Its great. My teammates know where I am and I know where they are so for me to get them the ball and for them to make that shot its really important.”

On shutting down Miller in the second half

“It was more of a team effort shutting her down, my position coach told me not to let her catch and that was my main focus just not letting her catch the ball, not giving her any space.”

Marina Lizarazu

Freshman Guard

On playing well this afternoon

“I was very excited because it was my first time that I went with the 5 starters on, I just wanted to help my team and do my best.”

Lou Hamilton

Grambling State Head Coach

“I tell you what, this game can be exciting, full of highs full of lows, and one of the things that we did that was one of the high points to get that four point play from a freshman, she was a parade all American so, the girl can actually play. Dennisha Chambers is going to be special for us, we’re really excited about her, she’s got so much fight into her, and she’s relentless and she never gives up. For us to get some good shots, that four point play was huge. I think it gave us a lot of momentum and a chance to be in the basketball game, I think we got a little winded towards the end of the game, that was key in terms of Texas Tech being able to pull away. A lot of respect towards Texas Tech as a program, our girls just had a lot of fight tonight and kind of had a will.”
