December 2, 1998
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Lady Raiders dominated the game from start to finish with a 96-39 victory over Texas-San Antonio Wednesday night at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. The 57-point winning margin was the most since Nov. 28, 1997 when Tech defeated St. Francis by 56 points (91-35). The record winning margin by Tech is 77 points, which took place on Jan. 18, 1980 as the Lady Raiders beat Central State, 125-48.
Senior guard Rene Hanebutt scored a team-high 19 points while Angie Braziel, this week's Big 12 Conference Women's Player of the Week, collected her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Junior forward Aleah Johnson added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Texas Tech head coach Marsha Sharp was encouraged by the production she got from the entire squad. "We got some good minutes from a lot of people," states Sharp. "When we brought people off the bench, they did a good job of getting up and down the court for us."
After a 50-17 halftime lead, Tech kept applying defensive pressure, creating 19 UTSA turnovers. Tech also shone from the free throw line, hitting 27-of-32 shots from the charity stripe.
The Lady Raiders improve to 4-1 while UTSA drops to 1-4. Tech travels to Houston this weekend to compete in the Gene Hackerman Rice Invitational. Tech's opponent on Saturday is Wisconsin. Gametime is set for 2:00 p.m.
