Lady Raiders Defeat Penn State, 79-65
Dec. 21, 2004
LUBBOCK, Texas - Tonight's fast paced game proved to be a battle of the benches that kept the Lady Raider Nation on the edge of their seats. Texas Tech dominated the second half to pull ahead and gain a 79-65 win over Penn State. Senior Cisti Greenwalt led Tech with a season-high 21 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks. Four Lady Raiders were in the double-digits.
Penn State put points on the board first with a bucket from the post by Jennifer Harris. The Lady Lions missed two shots on the next possession and Greenwalt grabbed the board. Tech failed to execute at the other end and Penn State added another basket. Dabbs answered with a nice jumper from the wing. Both teams established a fast pace that remained for the duration of the game. A Greenwalt rebound set up a Robertson baseline jumper to tie the score 4-4. Robertson followed with a three to put Tech ahead, but the Lions answered with two. Greenwalt was fouled on the basket at 15:39 and made a trip to the line for a three-point play. A nice move down low by Penn State's Amanda Brown tied the game. Dabbs answered with two, and Greenwalt followed with a nice spin move in the paint to put Tech up 14-12.
A three-pointer by Penn State's Jennifer Brenden gave the Lady Lions a 19-16 lead at 11:02. Tech struggled with missed shots, but Judith Smith made a crucial three at 8:24 to give the Lady Raiders some momentum. Neither team executed on the next few drives until an Erin Myrick bucket at 5:42 put the score at 26-23. Davis added a key rebound to set up a Dabbs three to give Tech a 28-26 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the half. Brooke Baughman fed Davis at the back door on the next possession to put Tech up 32-27. Both teams shot 30 percent from the field during the first half.
Dabbs started off the second half with a smooth jumper from the top of the key. Harris answered at the other end for the Lady Lions, and Greenwalt followed with a reverse lay-in from under the basket. She swatted away a Penn State shot to set up a Smith jumpshot from the top of the key. Greenwalt added two more blocks on the next few Lady Lion possessions. Robertson fed Davis for a fast-break lay-in to put Tech up 44-34 with 15 minutes remaining in the game. Robertson had back-to-back rebounds to set up jumpshots by Grant and Greenwalt and hit a three with nothing but net on the next possession.
The Lady Lions implemented a full court press for the remainder of the game, but the Lady Raiders continued to penetrate the press and maintain the lead. Greenwalt capped several fast breaks with a bucket to put Tech up 74-61 with less than three minutes on the clock. Tech continued to break the press, and Davis added two from the post for a final tally of 79-65.
