Lady Raiders vs. Houston

December 30, 2012

Texas Tech Head Coach Kristy Curry

On ending the half and starting the second half well

“I just thought we did a better job the first four minutes to the second half than we did in the first half, when it was seven to seven and just coming out and executing and reversing the ball, making the extra pass and you are most open when you first catch the ball, open to shoot or to pass, and I thought our perimeters did an excellent job of getting post touches. We talked at the half that our posts were seven-of-nine at halftime, we need to get post touches and get the ball inside and be aggressive.”

On holding Houston to 56 points

“I think you have to be pleased, anytime you hold someone in the thirties percentage-wise and you can score 80 points coming off the break. I love our balance, we had four in double figure and seven, seven, nine, and what they all have to understand is that they are all going to be called upon and everybody on that bench has a chance to impact the game and I think we know that together it’s going to take all of us and I was pleased with how they all showed up and played today. Chynna Brown getting in foul trouble and Amber Battle stepping up and then Chynna coming back in and doing the best she could, I was just pleased with how they dealt with some adversity and how they looked demeanor-wise, and their maturity and just a lot of things today that maybe y’all can’t see that we can.”

On what it’s going to take to beat Oklahoma State

“ I feel like our schedule has prepared us and I think we have played in tough environments in New Mexico and against two good opponents out in Las Vegas, going to Arizona State, I feel like our schedule has put us in the position to go up there and be prepared and what I think is really exciting is this group has gone up there and won before, so we will draw from the experiences we’ve had and we are excited about the challenge. There is no doubt they are a good basketball team and they had a good finish to the season last year, but we feel like our schedule has prepared us and our past has prepared us and we’re ready and we’re excited.”

Texas Tech Player Quotes

Senior Casey Morris

On if she feels more comfortable when she makes her first shot

“I think that usually works best when I come out strong and shots fall, I think that just makes confidence build, but even when I do come out and miss I think I need to still keep on shooting, just like anyone else on our team who is a shooter they just need to keep on shooting just like they’ve been preaching throughout the season, but it is always good to start off strong.”

On how big it was when she two three’s right before half

“I think that really helped momentum and whenever we score I think it’s always good when we are the ones getting buckets and then getting stops on the defensive end. When we put points up and stop them I think it’s always a plus for us.”

Senior Mary Bokenkamp

On the offensive balance Texas Tech had today

“I think coming off the bench we all try to have the most energy as possible coming into the game and we are all together on the bench in the first half watching and trying to keep our minds focused so when we got our chance in the second half we wanted to make the most of it and we just try to come out with a lot of energy defensively and rebounding and baskets happened to fall as well so it worked out.”

On the upcoming game against Oklahoma State

“It’s just like any other game, I’m always ready and keeping my mind focused and in to the game so whenever I come into the game I’m ready to shoot and try and help my team anyway I can.”

Houston Head Coach Todd Buchanan

“I think the biggest thing was we were down seven under the four minute-media timeout and we had four players with two fouls and that’s just a rule of mine if you have two you’re going to sit and if I had it to do over again would I go offense for defense, maybe, probably not but just to defuse the situation at hand maybe. Then obviously we lost Casey Morris a couple of times and she made two big three’s to end the half and the next thing you know we are down 14 instead of seven, start with that and then the second half was kind of what we eluded to, they shot the ball extremely well. I thought they kind of had their way early and we never could catch back up and frustration built, and I felt like we never got out of our own way once we got so frustrated with missing our own easy shots. We had multiple opportunities in the low post, high post, in transition, which is how we want to play anyways but for whatever reason today the ball wouldn’t go round rim when we really needed it to the most. I thought going back to the first half the other crucial thing was we were four-for-nine on the foul line and there were at least three of those nine where we missed the front end of the one-and-one in the bonus situation, we kind of shot ourselves in the foot there as well.”
