Murphree, Barncastle Named First Team Academic All-Big 12

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Big 12 conference has named 47 student-athletes to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team, the league office announced. Texas Tech senior Jordan Murphree and sophomore Jordan Barncastle were named to the first team.
Murphree, who hails from Brock, Texas, holds a 3.60 grade-point average (GPA) and graduated cum laude in just three year in May 2009 with a degree in exercise and sport science. She is currently working on a second degree in human development and family studies. Murphree is a three-time first team Academic All-Big 12 selection.
The Martin's Mill, Texas, native Barncastle has a 3.35 GPA as she is majoring in biology. This is the first Big 12 academic honor for Barncastle.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and media relations offices, the women's basketball academic all-league squad consisted of 34 first team members combined with 13 on the second team. First team members have recorded a 3.20 or better GPS, while the second team is those with a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To quality, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or in the two previous semesters and have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participations are also eligible.
