LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech women's basketball team had four players honored on Thursday when the Big 12 Conference announced its annual awards and All-Big 12 Teams.
Tech junior transfer Jackie Patterson earned Co-Newcomer of the Year honors and senior guard Chynna Brown was one of 10 players to earn All-Big 12 First Team honors, marking the first time a Lady Raider was named to the First Team since Erin Grant and LaToya Davis in 2006. Fellow seniors Monique Smalls and Casey Morris were named to the All-Big 12 Second Team while Smalls also earned her third consecutive spot on the five-person All-Big 12 Defensive Team.
The Lady Raiders were the only Big 12 Conference team to have all three backcourt starters named to either the first team or second team.
Brown averaged 16.8 points per game in Big 12 play this season, scoring 20 points or more in her final four games. She earned her first All-Big 12 honors since being named the 2011 Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year.
Morris ended the season averaging 12 points per game overall and 11.8 in Big 12 play. She was the first of two Lady Raiders (Brown) to score her 1,000th career point this season and led the team in 3-pointers for the second consecutive season (62). She was fifth in Big 12 play in free throw percentage (84.1 percent) hitting 37 of 44 from the charity stripe.
Smalls started her 131st consecutive game on Monday -- the fifth longest streak nationally -- and ended Big 12 play as the league's second-highest player in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.7). Smalls is fourth all-time in assists with 507 and earned her fourth and fifth All-Big 12 honors of her career.
Patterson started three games and played in 29 overall this season. She had her first career double-double on Nov. 25 vs New Orleans (16 pts, 10 rebs). Patterson averaged 4.6 points per game and hit 37.8 percent from the field.
Tech (21-9) faces Oklahoma State (20-9) at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Big 12 Championship Quarterfinals.
