April 12, 2000
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raider basketball team has signed junior college standout Candi White to a National Letter of Intent to attend Texas Tech University in the fall of 2000. Tech has now inked six players, including the five who signed in November: Jolee Ayers (Canyon, Texas), Dionne Brown (Georgetown, Texas), Casey Jackson (Amarillo, Texas), Jia Perkins (Granbury, Texas) and Natalie Ritchie (Amarillo, Texas).
White, a 5-7 point guard from Canyon, Texas and Canyon High School, has spent the last two seasons at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kan. In her first year at SCCC, she led her team to a 34-4 record and was fifth in the NJCAA National Tournament. She was a second-team All-Jayhawk Conference selection and named to the Region VI All-Tournament team, while being selected to the NJCAA National Select team that toured Hungary and Slovakia. White's team was also named the 1999 NJCAA National Academic Champions.
This season, White led her team to a 33-1 record and captured the Jayhawk Western Division title. SCCC was ranked No. 1 in the final NJCAA national rankings. White was an honorable mention All-American selection, while being named first-team All-Jayhawk Conference and first-team All-Region VI. White was also received Region VI All-Tournament honors.
White holds SCCC school records for career assists (577), season assists (354) and the single-game record for assists (16). This year she averaged 10.1 points, 10.4 assists and 3.6 steals per game.
"I am real excited to have Candi as a Lady Raider," said head coach Marsha Sharp. "She has had a terrific career at Seward County Community College. She has had two great coaches, Jim Littell at Seward and Joe Lombard at Canyon and will bring a lot of great qualities to the point guard position. She is a great passer and runs the floor well - a very solid player. I am most impressed with how she runs a basketball team."
