Aug. 28, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech basketball season is just around the corner and season tickets are currently on sale.
Season ticket holders will enjoy 20 exciting women's home games, including non-conference opponents UNLV, UCLA, and Arkansas. They will also host Kansas State, the 2008 Big 12 Conference champions, in-state rivals Texas, Texas A&M and Baylor and other Big 12 contests. After a year that saw seven players getting their first experience playing Division I basketball, the Lady Raiders return four starters and are led by senior Dominic Seals. Seals, the 2008 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, led the team in scoring (13.9) and rebounding (8.3) in her first year as a Lady Raider. Tech also welcomes four newcomers in junior Tilmila Martin and freshmen Jordan Barncastle, Lindie Kimbro and Kierra Mallard along with sophomore Kaylan Talley, who redshirted last year.
"We are very excited to get the season started," said head women's basketball coach Kristy Curry. "We have a more experienced nucleus returning than a year ago and are adding four new faces that we feel will be great additions. Our fans play a huge role in our success by being the `team behind our team'."
Men's basketball has 18 home games on the schedule tipping off with Saint Francis (Pa.) on Nov. 14. Other non-conference match-ups include Sam Houston State, New Mexico and TCU. The conference schedule has Tech playing host to Texas and Texas A&M, among eight conference match-ups capping off the season hosting the 2007-08 National Champion Kansas Jayhawks.
"With 18 home games, we really want the United Spirit Arena to continue to be a home court advantage for the Red Raiders and we look forward to our fans coming and watching Red Raider basketball," stated head men's basketball coach Pat Knight.
This season the men's and women's teams will host four double-headers with both teams competing on the same days. The dates include Nov. 14, Dec. 20, Jan. 31, and Feb. 28.
Season ticket holders can enjoy a special season ticket holder ONLY practice for both programs on Oct. 17, for the men and Oct. 31, for the women. Both teams are also planning a casual open house on the east side of the United Spirit Arena the night of Oct. 10, following the Homecoming bonfire. Posters and schedule cards will be available. Additionally, both teams will be signing autographs the following day in Raider Alley at the Nebraska football game. Information will be released soon on the annual Tip-Off luncheon that is changing format to a 6:30 pm dinner event at the United Spirit Arena.
