LUBBOCK, Texas — The Texas Tech women’s basketball team returns to the United Spirit Arena floor on Wednesday for its first official practice of the season as the Lady Raiders begin preparing for the 2012-13 regular season.
“It’s great to get back to our regular practices and working out with our new and returning players,” head coach Kristy Curry said. “I’m excited to see how each of them have developed over the offseason and ready to start preparing for the regular season.”
Tech returns four starters, five seniors from its 2011-12 team that finished 21-14 and advanced to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament last season, making it to the third round. Senior guards Monique Smalls, Chynna Brown, Christine Hyde, Casey Morris and Mary Bokenkamp lead the roster of 14 into this season, which includes five newcomers – four of which are freshmen.
Junior college transfer and NJCAA All-American Jackie Patterson joins PARADE All-American and freshman Minta Spears along with freshmen Ivonne Cook-Taylor, Shunta Nevitt and Kellyn Schneider on the team this season.
The Lady Raiders will hold 30 practices over the next month before playing is first exhibition game on Nov. 4 at home against Midwestern State. Tech will start the regular season on the road Nov. 11 at Arizona State and Nov. 15 at New Mexico before playing its home opener Nov. 18 against Lipscomb.
