LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech women's basketball standout Sheryl Swoopes will be inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame Mon., Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. in the Senate Chamber of the Texas State Capitol Building in Austin, Texas.

The 2004 recipients include Swoopes, The Honorable Susan Combs, Trinidad Mendenhall and Mary Meyers Rosenfield.

Swoopes led Texas Tech to the 1993 National Championship, while being named a unanimous National Player of the Year. The two-time Southwest Conference Player of the Year's accomplishments has only continued to grow after college. Her highlights include: member of the gold-medal winning 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic teams, MVP of the 2002 USA World Basketball Championship Team, twice the WNBA Player of the Year and three times the Defensive Player of the Year. She also led the Houston Comets to WNBA championships in 1998, 1999, and 2000.

The Governor's Commission for Women established the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1984, a biennial awards ceremony that recognizes the achievements of women in areas of business, health, athletics and public services. Inductees include first ladies, teachers, astronauts and athletes. Texas residents submitted nominations and a bi-partisan, independent panel of judges selected the 2004 recipients.

The event is free to attend and open to the public. Parking is available in the Capitol Visitors Parking Garage at 1201 San Jacinto located between Trinity and San Jacinto Streets at 12th and 13th Streets. For more information, please contact the Governor's Commission for Women at 512-475-2615.
