Lady Raider Pierson Named Big 12 Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week

DALLAS, Texas - Texas Tech’s Plenette Pierson was named Big 12 Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week and Kansas’ Suzi Raymant was named Big 12 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and by a vote of a media panel for games played from Nov. 29-Dec. 5.
Pierson scored a career-high 21 points in Texas Tech’s 66-63 overtime win at Southern California and then matched it in the Lady Raiders’ 63-47 victory over SMU. The 6-1 freshman forward/center hit the game-tying shot at USC with one second left to send the game into overtime. She has scored in double figures in all five of Tech’s games and leads the team in scoring with 17.6 points per game.
Pierson is second on the team in rebounding with 9.2 boards per game and recorded her second double-double of the year in the USC game with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Raymant, a 5-11 senior guard, was named MVP of the KU Credit Union Jayhawk Classic after leading Kansas to wins over Loyola Marymount and No. 9/15 Santa Barbara. She was instrumental in KU’s win over UCSB, scoring the last four points of the game and 15 of the final 17 Jayhawk points to lead KU to the championship.
In the first round of the tournament Raymant registered 16 points off of 7-of-12 shooting. She is Kansas’ leading scorer on the season with an average of 16.2 points per game and has helped the Jayhawks to a 5-0 mark which ties as the third-best start in school history.
