Texas Tech Women's Golf Nationally Ranked
Red Raiders Make First-Ever Appearance in Preseason Poll
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team is ranked No. 25 in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, marking the first time the program has achieved a preseason national ranking.
Head coach Jeff Mitchell's squad was one of four Big 12 Conference women's golf teams to be ranked among the preseason top 25. Texas A&M was 15th, Texas was 22nd and Oklahoma State tied for 23rd.
"This is a great honor for our team," Mitchell said. "This shows the kind of strong national reputation we are beginning to build here at Texas Tech. Our players have worked very hard to achieve such success."
Texas Tech opens the 1997-98 season with its first fall tournament in its own Jeannine McHaney Memorial. The 54-hole event will be played Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 15-16 at Lubbock Country Club and will feature 12 teams. The field includes Texas Tech, Baylor, Hardin-Simmons, Lamar, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Texas, Oklahoma, SMU, Wichita State and Wyoming.
The Red Raiders, who return five letter winners, will feature four of their top five golfers that played on last season's NCAA West Regional squad. Back from last year's team are senior Kristin Kight, juniors Beth Covington and Brooke Lowrance, and sophomore Alana Soliz. - TTU -
