LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University women's golf team will host the first-ever Jeannine McHaney Memorial Golf Tournament Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 15-16 at Lubbock Country Club. The 54-hole event will be the first women's intercollegiate golf tournament hosted by Texas Tech. Head coach Jeff Mitchell's 25th-ranked Red Raiders will be one of 12 teams playing the difficult par-72, 6,080-yard Lubbock Country Club layout. The field includes Texas Tech, Baylor, Hardin-Simmons, Lamar, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Texas, Oklahoma, SMU, Wichita State and Wyoming.
"We are looking forward to having the opportunity to showcase Lubbock, Texas Tech and our athletics program," Mitchell said. "This event will be very exciting for us."
The Red Raiders, who return five letter winners, will feature four of their top five golfers that played on last season's NCAA West Regional squad. Back from last year's team are senior Kristin Kight, juniors Beth Covington and Brooke Lowrance, and sophomore Alana Soliz.
Monday will feature 36 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:00 a.m. with tee times off the first and tenth tees.
The tournament pays tribute to the late Jeannine McHaney, who was the driving force behind the establishment and much of the success of women's athletics at Texas Tech. She was Tech's women's athletic director from 1975 to 1985 before the school merged the men's and women's departments. McHaney was then named assistant athletic director and was promoted to associate AD in 1991. McHaney joined the Texas Tech faculty in 1966 after getting her bachelor's and master's degrees from Arkansas State University. In addition to being a professor of physical education and director of women's intramurals, she served as Tech's volleyball (1966-75) and gymnastics (1968-71) coach.
