Hill, Kaufman Lead No. 20 Texas Tech in Puerto Rico First Round
Feb. 10, 2013
The Lady Raiders recorded an 8-over 296 at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, finishing five strokes behind first-day leader Arkansas. Alabama and TCU wrapped the day tied for second at 5-over.
"I think we played pretty well today," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "We were pretty anxious to get out there and compete again. We had good balance out of everybody, and I feel like all our players feel like they left some shots out there. We'll try to clean that up tomorrow."
While Tech is used to being led most rounds by Kaufman, it was the play of Hill that sparked the Lady Raiders over the first 18 holes. The freshman recorded three birdies, including one on the par-3 third to close the round, en route to a 73 score.
Hill and Kaufman will enter Monday's second round tied for fourth overall and three strokes back of first-day leader Emily Tubert of Arkansas who fired a 2-under 70 opening round.
"Kimmy has played well and got off to a good start today," Robertson said. "This is her first time to play this course, and she was in love with it yesterday after the practice round. She's comfortable out here and hopefully she can keep it up the rest of the week."
Gabby Dominguez and Hannah Arnold completed Tech's card with a pair of 3-over 75 cards that put the duo in a tie for 22nd overall. Elin Arvidsson finished one stroke back in a tie for 39th with a 4-over score.
The second round is set for another 6 a.m. CT shotgun start Monday morning. Fans can keep up with the results throughout the day at www.golfstat.com.
