Brooke Lowrance Leading McHaney TournamentWomen's golf standout in front by one shot.
Sept. 14, 1998 LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior All-America candidate Brooke Lowrance holds a one-shot lead after two rounds of the 1998 Jeannine McHaney Memorial Golf Tournament. Lowrance fired rounds of even-par 72 and one-under 71 in Monday's first and second rounds. Oregon State's Kathleen Takaishi is one shot back after two even-par rounds of 72. "For the 36 holes, I hit the ball really well, except for maybe four or five holes, which were my bogies today," Lowrance said. "My putting, I didn't have any three putts. So that was one good thing, because usually I have at least one. Really, overall it was pretty solid." Oregon State, the only team to fire two sub-300 rounds today, has an 11-shot edge (597) over TCU (608). Texas Tech (611) is third, SMU (622) fourth and Oklahoma (622) fifth. Wichita State (639) is sixth, Lamar (648) seventh and Hardin-Simmons (679) eighth. "Obviously, they held up pretty well under the conditions of the 36 holes, the heat, and the difference in the golf course from what we are used to," said Oregon State head coach Rise Lakowske. "The grasses are different, obviously. It's a lot harder, the ground is more firm. I thought they adjusted really well. They were tired in the second round, they hung in there, kept their focus, and I was real pleased with that." Texas Tech junior Jamie Vannoy (153) is tied for 10th. Red Raider sophomore Priscillia Hunt (155), who tied for first last season, is tied for 13th after struggling to an 8-over 80 in the first round. Tech junior Heather Wrede (160) is tied for 22nd, while sophomore Beth Covington (166) is tied for 31st after consecutive rounds of 83. "You have to take your hat off to Brooke Lowrance," said Texas director of golf Jeff Mitchell. "That's some great golf. She has been playing really well all summer. I don't know if she would attribute it to the fact that she got some new irons, but she has really hit the ball well. It doesn't surprise me that she has played well. But, 72, 71 is awfully good, even on your home golf course. The pins are pretty tough. I wanted people to have to really use some course management to play the golf course."
Second Round Quotes
JEFF MITCHELL, Texas Tech University Director of Golf "You have to take your hat off to Brooke Lowrance. That's some great golf. She has been playing really well all summer. I don't know if she would attribute it to the fact that she got some new irons, but she has really hit the ball well. It doesn't surprise me that she has played well. But, 72, 71 is awfully good, even on your home golf course. The pins are pretty tough. I wanted people to have to really use some course management to play the golf course.
"Oregon State obviously played very well. They are going to be hard to catch tomorrow.
"As far as my team, for the first tournament of the year, this is a pretty good start. I think there is some added pressure playing at home. I think it is just self afflicted, but there is still some pressure on them to perform well at home. I know they want to play well. Playing at home sometimes just makes it a little bit harder to stay with your own game.
"But, I am looking forward to playing tomorrow. I am hoping maybe we can catch TCU and really, maybe just give Oregon State a scare."
BROOKE LOWRANCE, Texas Tech University "For the 36 holes, I hit the ball really well, except for maybe four or five holes, which were my bogies today. My putting, I didn't have any three putts. So that was one good thing, because usually I have at least one. Really, overall it was pretty solid.
"My thoughts would be to break 71 (tomorrow). I want to play well, hopefully make some more putts than I did today. I got really close a lot of times, I'd be six feet. I missed a lot of shorter putts inside 10 feet for birdie. Maybe, I can do that again, hit it as well tomorrow and make some more putts."
RISE LAKOWSKE, Oregon State University Head Coach "Obviously, they held up pretty well under the conditions of the 36 holes, the heat, and the difference in the golf course from what we are used to. The grasses are different, obviously. It's a lot harder, the ground is more firm. I thought they adjusted really well. They were tired in the second round, they hung in there, kept their focus, and I was real pleased with that.
"They just have to do the same thing (tomorrow)...stay focused, make the adjustments to the golf course as the greens change speeds. They have to do that. Make those adjustments."
KATHLEEN TAKAISHI, Oregon State University "It was kind of a steady round. I had a couple of birdies, couple of bogies. I feel pretty good. I want to get some rest tonight and come out ready to play tomorrow."
