LUBBOCK, Texas - Backed by a 4-under-par card from Kim Kaufman, 15th-ranked Texas Tech wrapped the opening round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic tied for second place Monday at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.
The Lady Raiders, along with Texas State and Notre Dame, trail host Oklahoma by five strokes entering Tuesday's second round after all three teams recorded 1-over 289 cards. The Sooners, meanwhile, were the only squad under par thanks to a 4-under 284 round.
"Today was a tough start but our team hung in there and finished strong," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "We are in a good spot going into tomorrow. Kim had another solid round to lead the way for us and we'll look for the rest of our lineup to shoot near par tomorrow as well."
Kaufman led the Lady Raiders throughout the opening 18 holes as her 68 card put her in a three-way tie for the lead with Denver's Tonje Daffinrud and Notre Dame's Lindsey Weaver. The senior recorded five birdies on the day, including one on the par-4 ninth to close the round.
She was boosted by the play of both Kimmy Hill and Beverly Mendoza, who fired 72 and 73 cards to finish the day tied for 13th and 19th, respectively. Both players are looking for their second top-20 performance this year after Mendoza finished fourth at the season-opening Ptarmigan Ram Classic while Hill tied for 20th a few weeks ago at the Windy City Collegiate.
The Lady Raiders have company at the top of the leaderboard as Denver is only a stroke back of Tech in fifth place while Ohio State is two back in sixth overall.
Dominguez will be the first Lady Raider on the course Tuesday as she will tee off the second round at 10:20 a.m. alongside Taylor Schmidt of Oklahoma and Ashley Armstrong of Notre Dame.
