STANFORD, Calif. - The seventh-ranked Stanford women's golf team came out strong in its defense of the Stanford/PEPSI Women's Intercollegiate title, leading by five strokes with a four-under-par 288 after the first round. The Cardinal was the only team to navigate the par-73, 6,093-yard Stanford Golf Course layout under par. Rounding out the top-five teams are No. 16 Indiana at 293, No. 2 Arizona at 298, and No. 25 Washington and No. 18 New Mexico State both at 300.

Last year's medalist, Stanford sophomore, and ranked 11th in the country, Hilary Homeyer is currently in a tie for third place after posting a two-under-par 71 (33-38).

Leading individually are Erin Carney of Indiana and Elisha Au of Washington. Both carded 35-35-70, three strokes under par. Also scoring for Stanford is JaeJean Ro, tied with Homeyer for third at 35-36-71. No. 7 Stephanie Keever and Michelle Sperry are both tied for 10th place at even-par 73s.

The Intercollegiate features ten of the top-25 ranked teams in the country, according to the MarsterCard Collegiate Golf Poll, and all Pac-10 schools. The tournament will also be a preview to the Pac-10 Championships, held on Stanford's course in April.

The second round begins Sat., Oct. 24 at 8 a.m. on the first and tenth tees. The final round on Sunday will be a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
