LUBBOCK, Texas — She needed a little time and even gained some frequent flyer miles - traveling 8,433 miles - but Lauren Mason is finally a Lady Raider.
The Texas Tech women’s golf team was pleased to announce the addition of Mason to the 2014 roster this month, bringing the talented Australian golfer to West Texas as the seventh member of the team.
Mason will sit out competition during the spring semester but will be able to practice with the team.
“We are so excited to have Lauren on our squad,” head coach JoJo Robertson said. “She is an incredible golfer and someone we have looked at for some time now. She will be a great addition to our team.”
The Horton Park golfer was picked to be on consecutive Queensland Girls Teams for the annual match play after bouncing back from hip surgery and rehab when she was only 13 years old. She led the squad to the title over Western Australia.
She continued to improve and find more success on the golf course when she won the Sunshine Coast Ladies Open Amateur Championship in 2011 at the age of 15 - a 54-hole tournament in Australia. She defended the title two more times in 2012 and 2013.
She says the chance to play Division I golf in the Big 12 Conference at Texas Tech is a step closer in completing her dream of one day playing on the LPGA Tour.
“I am so thankful for the opportunity to play at Texas Tech,” Mason said. “This is an incredible place to go to school and have the chance to play collegiate golf at the highest level.”
