LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Gabby Dominguez was named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month Wednesday following two top-10 finishes during the month of February, including a second-place performance at this week's Westbrook Spring Invitational.
The monthly award is the first in Dominguez' career and the first for a Lady Raider since Alex Gibson garnered the accolade in October 2009.
"This is a great honor for Gabby as well as our program," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "Gabby has really played well during our first two tournaments this spring, and we will be counting on her to do the same the rest of the way."
The Chilton, Texas native is coming off a solid performance in Arizona this week where she was one of two Tech players to set the individual 54-hole score school record as she turned in a 9-under 207 card that left her and Kim Kaufman just short of the tournament crown.
She also helped lead the Lady Raiders to the lowest team 54-hole score in school history as Tech wrapped the tournament with an 8-under 856 that was seven strokes better than the previous mark at the 2008 Heather Farr Memorial Classic.
Dominguez also finished seventh at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic to start the spring. She was under par in four of six rounds in the month while also posting a 71.00 stroke average.
In seven events this year, Dominguez has placed in the top-10 five times with four top-five finishes as well. She is also on pace to shatter her own school record for single-season stroke average (74.7 in 2009-10) as she is currently second on the squad with a 72.4 average.
Dominguez and the Lady Raiders return to the links in two weeks for the Notre Dame Clover Cup held March 16-18 at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
