LUBBOCK, Texas - For the second-straight tournament, the 15th-ranked Texas Tech women's golf team will look to defend a team title from a year ago as the Lady Raiders tee off the Challenge at Onion Creek Monday morning in Austin, Texas.
The tournament, which Tech won by four stokes a year ago, will feature 36 holes on Monday at the par-70 Onion Creek Club followed by a final 18 on Tuesday morning. Tech is the highest ranked squad in the 13-team field that also boasts 38th-ranked and host Texas State along with No. 51 Gonzaga.
The Lady Raiders are coming off their third tournament title of the season from a few weeks ago when Tech held on for a one-stroke victory at the Mountain View Collegiate Invitational held in Tucson, Ariz. The victory matched the Tech single-season school record for most tournament titles from the 1993-94 campaign.
Tech was paced by seniors Gabby Dominguez and Kim Kaufman during the two-day tournament as the pair finished second and tied for third individually. It was the highest finish of the year for Dominguez while Kaufman, who is currently ranked fifth in the nation by Golfweek, was in the top 10 for the seventh time in eight events this year.
Dominguez won the 2011 Challenge at Onion Creek thanks to a birdie on the par-5 18th that left her with a 2-over 212 final card. Deborah DeVilla also recorded a seventh-place finish while Kaufman and Beverly Mendoza concluded the event tied for 14th overall.
The tournament will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Monday morning. Fans can keep up with the results live throughout the day at www.golfstat.com.
