LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 40 Texas Tech turned in an opening-round 299 and is in second place after the first day of the Utah-Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah. The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Brigham Young University, concludes today at the Sunbrook Golf Club.

Senior Jamie Vannoy (Sandy, Ore.) and freshman Melanie Hunt (Phoenix, Ariz.) are in a fifth-place tie after posting a pair of 1-over-par 73s. The two are six shots off of leader Maria Boden (67) of Oklahoma State. Sophomore Jennifer Newhouse (Bryan, Texas) is tied in 11th place with a 74, while freshman Stephanie Dukes (N. Richland Hills, Texas) and junior Priscillia Hunt (Phoenix, Ariz.) are tied in 50th place with 79 first-round totals.

Ninth-ranked Oklahoma State leads the tournament over Texas Tech by six strokes. No. 23 Missouri is in fourth place and is four shots behind the Red Raiders, while No. 15 New Mexico is in the seventh position and trails Tech by eight strokes.

The Red Raiders placed second in the event last year and won the tournament two years ago.
