LUBBOCK, Texas - Gabby Dominguez became the first Texas Tech golfer, male or female, to be named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month in consecutive months after earning the honor Thursday in an announcement by the league office.
The junior continued her successful season during March as she posted two top-10 finishes en route to leading the Lady Raiders to a fourth-place finish at the Notre Dame Clover Cup and then the tournament crown at the Mountain View Collegiate.
Dominguez posted a 71.67 stroke average during the month, lowering her season average to a team-best 72.2 average. She and teammate Kim Kaufman, who has a season 72.3 stroke average, are both on pace to snap the school's single-season record of 74.7 that was set by Dominguez as a freshman in 2009-10.
The Chilton, Texas native finished sixth at the Notre Dame Clover Cup before wrapping the month with a third-place performance at the Mountain View Collegiate. She leads all Tech players with seven top-10 and five top-five finishes this year.
Her 2010 card at the Mountain View Collegiate marked the third-lowest 54-hole score in school history, just three strokes back of the record she set with Kaufman earlier this spring at the Westbrook Spring Invitational. The Lady Raiders' tournament victory was their second of the year, a feat no Tech team had previously accomplished since the 1995-96 season.
Dominguez, who is ranked 35th in the latest Golfweek poll, has been in the top 10 in each of her last five events with three top-five finishes during that span.
She will take that streak into Tech's final tune-up before the Big 12 Championships in late April as the Lady Raiders head to the Pirates and Knights Invitational next week in Melbourne, Fla. The two-day tournament begins Monday at the Suntree Country Club.
